This is the time of year of the resolution. This is the time when we, as a society have institutionalized a desire to change and be different.
Don’t get me wrong – change is good. Change is necessary. We must try to grow into more developed people. We must work towards good habits, if some of our habits need improving. But listening to the cacophony of voices telling us we’re not good enough or that we are wrong or that we are defective, well, it’s just not helpful. At least it’s not helpful for me.
With all of that in mind, I thought this would be an excellent time to revisit a blog post I wrote last year about this very subject. I hope you enjoy it.
I’m very glad that you’ve joined me here at the blog today because I have a few things I want to get off my chest. Why don’t you sit down for a moment and we’ll chat. *gestures towards comfortable and attractive seating area*
Okay. Here’s the deal. As you know, there are a lot of voices out in the world these days. They’re all telling you what you should do and who you should be. Most of the voices are telling you that you’re not good enough, that you’re not special enough, that you just aren’t ENOUGH, if you get my meaning. And I’m tired of it. I’m tired of hearing the messages, and I’m tired of believing them. So I have some things I’d like to say to you.
You are not less than.
You are not more than.
You are not always wrong.
You are not always right.
You are not always stupid.
You are not always smart.
You are not always weak.
You are not always strong.
Nothing is “always”.
You don’t have to have all of the answers.
You don’t always need to know what to do next.
You are capable, but only if you choose to be capable.
You are beautiful – no matter your shape, size, creed or color.
Don’t be afraid.
You are not defective.
You are not a mistake.
You are unique.
You are a miracle.
You are you.
I think that about covers it. Have a wonderful day.
Love it Betsy! I am going thru alot of change right now, been separated from my husband for two months now after twenty years, it has been an adjustment but change has been great! You made my day 🙂
@Missy Emery: I’m glad you liked the post, Missy! Change is necessary sometimes, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy, does it? If you’re like me, what’s easy is just second-guessing everything. LOL
Betsy, can you put a “subscribe by email” on your blog to accomodate those of us with not only directional challenges, but distracted memory?
Nevermind…found the subscribe to email link. You see why I need it, right?
@Caroline Clemmons: LOL Caroline!!
